What I am able to do, especially for my children, is to allow them to help me decorate by using food color markers, which are fantastic. These are nice, fine point, very vibrant markers. And then I can give them a circle or a full sheet of paper and I can have them decorate. So, here we have a little sailboat. And then we also have a monster truck. So, you are able to take these and apply them to your cake. The way that you would use these is you would take them off of the paper backing. Now, sometimes they do stick. They are sugar, so with the humidity, they can get moist. If the first time you try to remove it from the sheet it does not release, do not fret.
